The artist Catherine Ann Brophy (Cath) concluded her residency at Surfy Space on July 26, 2025, with an Open Studio and Community Workshop Presentation. Cath’s long-standing artistic inquiry explores the visual language of architecture within the context of urbanization. Grounded in observational drawing, her practice employs mixed media to abstract and recompose isolated architectural elements, examining the intersections of space, structure, and form. During her residency in Luodong, she carried out daily fieldwork and photographic documentation, focusing on the layered patterns and formal vocabularies that emerge from the overlapping of rural architecture and ongoing development. These observations informed a new series of mixed-media works on paper.
A key aspect of the residency was its engagement with the local community. On July 24, Cath led a workshop in Community, where residents were invited to create collages based on their own spatial memories and everyday observations. From the lines of rooftops to the textures of aging walls, each work expressed an individual perspective on the built environment, revealing how artistic processes can extend and reshape collective memory and place-based identity.
The July 26 Open Studio provided visitors with a chance to engage closely with Cath’s creative process and conceptual framework. Her works remain on view at Surfy Space through July 30. The public is warmly invited to visit, connect, and experience this dialogue between art, architecture, and local memory.
