Tomoyuki & Yafa Koseko

Japan

Residency period

1/15/25

3/1/25

Tomoyuki Koseko is a visual artist based in Kyoto, Japan, where he runs the creative studio KOSEKO DESIGN&PRESS alongside his partner, Yafa. His work explores "mitate", a traditional Japanese aesthetic concept of visual reinterpretation, which he deconstructs and reconstructs from an interactive visual perspective. This process has led him to develop and practice his own original creative method, which he calls "trans-perception."

Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Koseko currently lives in Kyoto. After completing his Master’s degree at Musashino Art University, where he researched visual interaction, he founded the independent publishing label "Koseko Bunko" in 2016. Through his art magazine series "Gitai", he regularly presents his visual design experiments and research at art book fairs and exhibitions across Asia.

Residency plan

This project is an art project that generates experimental print expressions based on a specific terrain in Taiwan. Supported by the artist-in-residence program Surfy Space, this project involves our stay and research in Taiwan. Approximately 2 hours east of Taipei by train, the serene landscapes of the Yilan Plain unfold. At its northern edge lies Waiao Beach, where unique wave-like rock formations create a striking terrain. These rocks will serve as the foundation for our experiments. By altering the color of the sedimentary rock photographs to blue, we discovered that the rock surface can be transformed to resemble a seascape. We aim to explore new possibilities in printmaking by utilizing the inherent textures and imperfections—such as irregularities and fading—often considered flaws in traditional screen printing.
