How will AI affect the governance of the future city, and how will this manifest itself as artworks an audience can experience? Stanza's artworks merge online virtual data layers to create a Third Space, enabling new possibilities in the virtual world of shared data. The work invites inquiry into imagined futures which use new technologies to liberate, empower, and connect when used inclusively and collaboratively. The prospects of new technologies depend on intent and motivation: Will such technologies see us in a utopic world of connection and liberation, or will they control us, separate us, divide us, and create more borders?
Residency plan
An artistic investigation into the City of the future. The underlying question this residency will explore is: Can a city be self-governing, making its own decisions based on open data from across the city, and how is the citizen a participant in this? It is now possible to suggest that machines- or rather, algorithms- will govern the cities of the future. This vision creates tension that oscillates between utopian and dystopian. My idea that a series of machine learning algorithms can exercise some other form of authority over a series of real-time data sets exerts problematic ethical issues. This residency project is about creating artistic scenarios in the form of new media artworks (data visualisations, electronics systems) that can both act as ‘smart’ or ‘intelligent’ interfaces while at the same time demonstrating how we are complicit in the direction these systems are taking and how they will unfold. The research questions are:- How will artificial intelligence (AI) affect the governance of the city? How can the collective body reclaim control over the data space using network technologies?
