Residency plan

(Yilan, Taiwan) – Non-binary Taiwanese-American artist Darice Chang (張芯甯, formerly 張丹輝), who gained attention in the Netflix documentary Midnight Asia, will present their first solo exhibition in Taiwan, "The Art of Living in a World on Fire", this weekend at Surfy Space (浪花) in Luodong, Yilan. The exhibition features new works created during their artist residency with HyperWave (超級浪), a Taiwanese art collective.

This multidisciplinary artist is best known for their environmentally-conscious drag persona "Dan Dan Demolition (丹丹男子漢寶寶)", which fuses ethical, eco-friendly fashion with non-binary performance, challenging societal norms around gender roles, queerness, and alternative subcultures. Although widely recognized for their spectacular drag performances, they aim to highlight the environmental and social consciousness embedded in their artistic practice through this exhibition.

About the Exhibition

"The Art of Living in a World on Fire" reflects on conscious existence as a human being in the chaotic modern world. Darice has spent years exploring plant-based advocacy in Taiwan (since 2016), ethical fashion with Fashion Revolution (2017), intersectional feminism with Women’s March Taiwan (2018), and zero-waste living. The exhibition showcases diverse identities and possibilities through the lens of a non-binary Taiwanese-American multimedia artist. Growing up between Eastern and Western cultures, Darice has absorbed and integrated both traditional and contemporary artistic expressions, creating a unique modern aesthetic.

This exhibition marks the first presentation of new physical works in nearly a decade, merging traditional calligraphy and ink painting with modern imagery. Darice presents three main series:

Midwest Kitsch (中西媚俗) – Contrasting Chinese and Japanese calligraphy with Midwestern American cultural iconography.

Social Ecology (社會生態) – Exploring environmental activism in the age of social media.

Fash Rev Now (立馬時尚革命) – Featuring slogans from Fashion Revolution, a global movement advocating for transparency and ethics in the fashion industry. Fashion Revolution was founded after the Rana Plaza factory collapse and has gained global traction. As an advocate for vegan and ethical fashion, Darice has actively modeled for eco-conscious brands and brought Taiwanese fashion labels into the international spotlight.

Additionally, the exhibition includes video works created for "Regeneration", a global drag performance event held during the pandemic.

Opening Weekend Experience

The opening weekend will feature an immersive art experience, “Untitled (Futures)”, a contemporary reinterpretation of Thai-American artist Rirkrit Tiravanija’s work “Untitled (Free)”, where he served green curry at 303 Gallery in New York. In Darice’s version, they will present a fully plant-based traditional Minnesota dish (commonly known as “hot dish” or “casserole”) within the gallery space.

"The commitment to a whole-food, plant-based diet is rooted in undeniable scientific evidence demonstrating that, for the best future of both the planet and human health, humanity must transition to more sustainable, plant-based eating habits. The optimal future for both the self and the ecosystem depends on it."
